Ah, the intro. This is the part where most writers attempt to regale you with an account of the myriad ups and downs they experienced throughout the year. However, most writers fail to understand one very important fundamental truth: no one cares. So without further ado and in no particular order, here’s a list of fifteen albums that grabbed a hold of my crank and kept on yankin’ in 2017…
Those of you that follow the brutal/slam death metal scene are likely well aware of the fact that Asia has been positively killing it for the last few years. While many of the continent’s most celebrated acts hail from Japan (Vomit Remnants, Gorevent, Infernal Revulsion, Medic Vomiting Pus, etc), neighboring China is no slouch either, as evidenced by Deformity of Human Consciousness, the second album from Tianjin’s The Dark Prison Massacre.
I had been looking forward to writing about Internal Bleeding’s new single “Final Justice,” but given recent events, I now find myself doing so with a heavy heart. On April 20, 2017, IB’s drummer and founding member William Tolley died while serving his community, battling a two alarm blaze as a fourteen year veteran of the Fire Department of New York, who had previously assisted with the September 11, 2001 rescue efforts as a volunteer fire fighter. “Final Justice” is to my knowledge his last recorded work with the band.
Ever since releasing the underrated classic Supreme Entity back in 1999, Japanese brutal death metallers Vomit Remnants have been something of an on again / off again band; Metal Archives lists their years active as 1997-2001, 2001-2005, 2015-present. This might explain why it took them nearly two decades to record and release a follow-up in the form of this year’s Hyper Groove Brutality, but rest assured it was more than worth the wait.
I discovered Long Island, NY’s Heisenberg recently while trawling Bandcamp for new bands. I was immediately drawn to them because they took two of my favorite things, Breaking Bad and ignorant slamming death metal and mashed them up to great effect. Although I’m not entirely sure if Walter White would approve of their guttural brutality, here at Doomsday Device I can safely say that their latest EP The Empire Business is one of the most engaging pure slam releases I’ve heard in a long time.
We’re only a month and a half into 2017 and it’s already turning out to be a great year for all things brutal death metal, so it seems like as good a time as any to resurrect Oodles of Brutals. For those not familiar, I have an unhealthy obsession with this most ignorant of subgenres and its various offshoots, and OOB started over at my old blog as a way for me to round up all all things brutal, gory and slamming in one space. So w/o further ado, let’s dive back into the BDM cesspit, shall we?
Formed in 1995, Sweden’s Soils of Fate are OGs of slamming death metal. Their two early full lengths, 2001’s Sandstorm and 2003’s Crime Syndicate are the purest distillations of slam you’re ever likely to hear and are among the genre’s seminal releases. After a decade-long break from recording, the band returned in 2014 with Thin The Heard, arguably their grooviest and most crushing album to date. I recently caught up with founding guitarist Magnus Lindvall to discuss the band’s return, their influences and whether or not we’d have to wait another decade for the next Soils of Fate album.
