I’m sure some of you have noticed that I’ve been doing less writing of late and focusing more on making YouTube videos. I’ll get back to writing eventually, but I’ve decided that I need to challenge myself with a new medium, as well as expand the THKD empire beyond blogging. It’s been a fun, refreshing change of pace and I hope you’ll come along on this journey with me while I try something new for a while.
With 2018 beginning to wind down, I’ve started to reflect upon all the great releases I’ve enjoyed throughout the year. This in turn lead me to compiling a massive playlist on Spotify; it’s about 99% metal, but there are also a few non-metal surprises lurking around in there.
What’s this? A goregrind band that doesn’t sing about gore? Germany’s The Creatures From The Tomb (henceforth referred to as TCFTT) play groovy goregrind in the vein of Cock and Ball Torture, The Day Everything Became Nothing and Cliteater, but their songs are not about zombies or hacking people up or having sex with corpses. Instead, TCFTT mine their subject matter from classic black and white horror films, such as The Phantom of the Opera and Creature from the Black Lagoon.
When I was in college, there were a few instances where I was beyond dirt poor. Back then, people actually still gave a shit about CDs, so painful as it was, I’d sell off chunks of my music collection so that I could like, pay my bills and eat ‘n’ shit. One of the CDs I sold was an original pressing of Birdflesh’s Night of the Ultimate Mosh on Razorback Recordings.
That was really stupid of me.
It’s hard to believe I’ve been running this blog for almost seven years. That’s the longest I’ve ever stuck with any of my creative projects. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that nothing lasts forever. And so it is that effective today, I’m shutting down IG for good.
Holy shit you guys, I haven’t done one of these brutal/tech/slam death metal roundup features since 2014! Wasn’t this supposed to be a semi-regular feature?! I guess 2014 was also the year that I realized I’m far too disorganized/scatterbrained to pull off regular features, so they’re more like whenever-I-feel-like-it features and apparently I haven’t felt like it in almost two years.
It’s been a few weeks since I saw Melt-Banana at Harlow’s, and for some reason I just can’t get their set out of my mind. Part of this is no doubt due to the fact that I actually got to see Melt-Banana; sure, they’ve toured the states many times, but keep in mind that I was living in the middle of Iowa up until a year ago, not exactly a hotbed for extreme and/or experimental music. Since we’ve moved to Sacramento, I’ve already had the pleasure of seeing a handful of bands I never imagined I’d get the opportunity to see without traveling great distances (Sargeist and Ufomammut immediately spring to mind), and the Japanese duo are probably number one on the “holy shit, I can’t believe they’re actually playing where I live” list so far.
